Steve Westbrooke joins the ARG
Steve has been welcomed as another new member of ARG. Steve works full-time as a route setter and duty manager at his local climbing wall following a career in local government environmental services.
Steve now enjoys getting outdoors whenever he can, so if he’s not climbing or bouldering, he’ll usually be out walking or mountain biking. A mature student of the Open University Steve has recently completed a Geology degree and is awaiting his final result.
"Having the opportunity to join the Arctic Research Group and support an expedition is incredibly exciting. It would allow me to gain valuable field experience while developing my knowledge of glaciers, an area in which I have a particular interest as my final degree project examined the recession of alpine glaciers and the influence of regional climate factors on their behaviour", Steve enthused.
Steve says he has been incredibly lucky with his climbing, as it has taken him throughout the UK and Europe and allowed him to visit some fantastic places. He’s been bouldering in India and has climbed extensively across both the North and South Islands of New Zealand, sampling as much of the climbing as he could. Steve hopes to return one day and experience more of what the country has to offer.
Steve’s real passion is mountaineering, and he has made regular trips to the Alps over the last seven years, summiting several 4,000-metre peaks.
A fully qualified Rock-Climbing Instructor and Rock-Climbing Development Instructor, Steve teaches single-pitch traditional and sport climbing in the UK and is working towards his Mountain Leader award and seeking to gain further qualifications to teach multipitch climbing in mountain environments.
