Arctic Research Group announces fundraising for 2025 expedition
The UK-based charity seeks public support for critical climate and marine research
The Arctic Research Group (ARG) is excited to announce the launch of a fundraising campaign to support its upcoming 2025 expedition to Tempelfjorden in the Svalbard archipelago. This environmental research project aims to revisit research sites first studied by the founders of the charity in 1983 and continue recent investigations into ocean plastic and climate studies.

The 2025 expedition is planning to focus on two main research themes: continuing studies on plastic waste in collaboration with Norwegian marine research group SALT, and revisiting climate change-related studies from 1983. Permissions are being sought from the Svalbard authorities for the team to conduct work on glaciers and engage in botanical and ornithological research, contributing to a comprehensive understanding of environmental changes over the past four decades. Additionally, discussions are underway to include projects in ground water, archaeology, geology, and meteorology.
To make this expedition a reality, ARG needs to raise £15,000 in addition to its own volunteers contributions and grant funding. This sum will cover essential expenses such as transportation, equipment, and logistical support. The fundraising campaign is hosted on GoFundMe, and ARG invites supporters, environmental enthusiasts, and the broader public to contribute to this vital cause.

ARG’s research not only contributes to the work of the scientific community, it also has broader societal benefits. By providing free access to their research outputs, ARG enables informed decision-making and promotes environmental awareness. Their work on marine litter, for instance, helps trace pollution sources and informs strategies to mitigate environmental impacts.
Commenting on the 2025 expedition, Dr. Stephen Staley, Group Leader, said: "Our work aims to provide affordable opportunities for early career researchers, while also generating valuable data for more experienced researchers, enabling projects that might not otherwise be possible."
Steve continues, “The Arctic Research Group achieves this by operating as a charity and involving dedicated volunteers who offer their time and expertise without charge. Although we’ll continue to do this, the costs involved are growing each year, so we are calling on anyone who sees value in our vital work to help support us.”
Join ARG in their mission to preserve the Arctic environment and contribute to cutting-edge research by donating to their GoFundMe campaign. Your support will help ensure the success of the 2025 expedition and the continuation of ARG’s invaluable work in the Arctic.
