Lily Thompson joins the ARG

Lily has been welcomed as a new member of the Arctic Research Group. Lily is an early-career researcher and polar educator, holding an MPhil in Polar Studies from the Scott Polar Research Institute at the University of Cambridge.

Lily's research is centred on interdisciplinary topics which consider both the physical and geopolitical components of the Arctic - her research considering how sea-ice decline has impacted Arctic shipping has been published in the Cambridge Journal for Climate Research, and won a DurhamARCTIC dissertation award. As a polar educator, Lily seeks to promote science communication and engagement, and delivers polar-themed geography lessons at her local primary school. Lily has also presented work at international Arctic conferences, including Arctic Frontiers, Arctic Science Summit Week, and the Canadian Association of Geographers’ Annual Meeting.

Lily enjoys being outdoors, spending her free time playing netball, cricket, or hiking. She also enjoys crocheting, and has contributed to an Ice Core Crochet Project based in Hawaii.

Lily is excited to have the opportunity to join ARG’s 2027 expedition - it will be her first time visiting Svalbard. "I'm looking forward to experiencing the Arctic’s polar climate, including the long sunny days and unique cryosphere that Svalbard has to offer" Lily continues, "I'm keen to get hands-on experience in the field. It's really exciting to think I could be studying the natural Arctic environment and will gain insight into how polar expeditions operate".
