Richard Grant
Founder Member
Richard is a Founder Member of the Arctic Research Group.
Richard has a PhD in Ground Engineering, is a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers and runs his own small Geotechnical Engineering Consultancy. He is a Member of the Arctic Club.
Richard was a member of the Groups’ 1990 expedition to the Rindersbukta area of Van Mijenfjord, working primarily on development and implementation of a successful automatic monitoring system for measuring movement of glaciers in surge, in this case the Bakaninbre.
He returned to Svalbard on the expeditions to Rindersbukta in 1991 and 1993, and to Bellsund in 1996, continuing glacier research, work on solifluction and assisting with other scientific projects including geology and flora / fauna.
Over the years, Richard has enjoyed pursuing a wide range of outdoor activities: kayaking, sailing, mountaineering, skiing, to name but a few.
After a prolonged period away, Richard returned to Svalbard on the 2025 expedition to Tempelfjord.
